Islip Notebook: Council Seeks To Reduce Litter

Public hearing set for August to discuss reducing the posting of flyers and other similar advertising materials on public and private property.

The Islip Town Council will hold a public hearing next month to discuss amending town code that pertains to the distribution and delivery of commercial and non-commercial advertising.

Co-sponsored by councilmen , a Democrat, and , a Republican, the proposed legislation was drafted in response to an accumulation of unwanted commercial and noncommercial handbills and advertising materials on private and public property that may end up as litter on properties and streets across Islip.

According to town officials, the legislation is needed to reduce litter, minimize the expenditure of public money to clean up handbills and similar material and regulate the manner of distribution and delivery of said materials.

Commercial and non-commercial advertising are defined as any printed or written matter that includes a circular, leaflet, pamphlet or booklet excluding newspapers.

The public hearing is set for August 16, 6 p.m. at Town Hall.

Civil War Re-enactment

The Town Council approved hosting a Civil War Encampment at the Islip Grange in Sayville on Saturday, September 24, and Sunday, September 25.

The event will feature five groups of Civil War re-enactors including the 30th Virginia infantry, the 9th Virginia Infantry, the 67th New York Infantry and the 14th Brooklyn New York Medical/Surgical Unit. In addition, the 10th New York Calvary will perform various tactical demonstrations.

During the weekend, musical entertainment will be provided by Maria Fairchild, Jack Dillon and Kirby Jolly and the Old Bethpage Brass Band, and demonstrations from a blacksmith and broom maker will also be featured. Weismann Authentic Carriages will provide carriage rides to attendees for a nominal fee.

Handicapped Parking Permit Renewal

Islip Town’s Division of Services for the Disabled is currently in the process of renewing more than 20,000 Handicapped Parking Permits for local residents with disabilities. All permanent permits (blue tags) expire at the end of the year.

A renewal application is being mailed to current permit holders, which should be completed and returned to the Town. New permits will be valid through the end of 2015.
