Great South Bay Power Squadron Holds Blessing of the Fleet

The event signifies the beginning of the boating season.

New York State Assemblywoman Ginny Fields attended the Great South Bay Power Squadron's Annual Blessing of the Fleet.

The Blessing of the Fleet signifies the official beginning of the GSBPS's active boating season. The group promotes boating education and safety. GSBPS organized the event where individual boats received a blessing by the Reverend Father Domenico Cinalla, Priest of Emmanual Episcopal Church in Great River.  The tradition started centuries ago as mariners received a blessing to guide them on a safe journey and protect them while at sea.

Attendance included District 3 Power Squadron Officers (District 3 covers all of Long Island), visiting United States Power Squadrons, the United States Coast Guard, the Marine Bureau of Suffolk County Police Department, the Town of Islip Harbor Patrol, among others.
