Cuomo Signs Zeldin-Supported Bill To Limit Protests at Military Funerals

State Senator says legislation will balance free speech rights with need to maintain respect for fallen service members.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed into law a bill to limit protests at military funerals.

Sponsored in the State Senate by Lee Zeldin, R-C-I-Shirley, and Joseph Griffo, R-C-Rome, the legislation requires the development and implementation of a permit process for demonstrations at veteran and veteran family member funerals. The bill also authorizes the imposition of fines for failure to comply with the permit provisions.

“Gov. Cuomo's signature on this legislation protects our future Gold Star families by ensuring dignity, respect and honor for our fallen military veterans,” said Zeldin. “We are balancing the free speech rights of those who protest military funerals with the need to protect our Gold Star families and allow them to peacefully mourn the loss of their military hero and loved one.”

Good start... But one better... Any demonstrations at any funeral should be outlawed. Free speach should be for those who can debate it. The respect for the departed and thier family in thier time of grief should be the only time that speach should be restricted.

This law is a bunch of fraudulent, feel-good nonsense. It's a bipartisan waste of time by the State Legislature - a solution to a problem that simply does not exist. For anyone interested, I wrote about this back in June. http://www.seanformato.com/?p=37

In today's world, this is a nessessary law. There are too many poeple out there that will put their own views over the right to mourn in private. Our military personell and their families should recieve our utmost respect, especially at a time of loss.
