Candidate Profile: Randy Altschuler

Altschuler is taking a second shot at winning New York's slightly altered First Congressional District seat.

Name: Randy Altschuler

Hometown: St. James

Party: Republican

Bio: Randy Altschuler, 41, is a businessman who grew up in New York City. He narrowly lost to five-term incumbent Tim Bishop in 2010 by a slim 593 votes, after nearly 200,000 ballots were cast.

Upon graduation from Harvard Business School, Altschuler worked in the financial services industry, and started Office Tiger with a former classmate in 1999. Office Tiger created 4,000 jobs worldwide, including 750 in America, and specialized in business process outsourcing – contracting business operations overseas – and was purchased by RR Donnelly for $250 million seven years after it launched.

Altschuler also co-founded CloudBlue in 2001. CloudBlue focuses on managing electronic waste, and employs over 400 Americans.

He has lived in St. James since 2007 with his wife, son and daughter.

After the 2010 Congressional race, Altschuler screened for the Republican nomination for Suffolk County Executive – a race County Treasurer and Republican Angie Carpenter eventually lost to Steve Bellone – though bowed out so he could run again for Congress.

Altschuler picked up the Independence Party nomination for the 2012 race, in addition to the Republican and Conservative lines he held in 2010.

Education: Altschuler earned his Bachelor's degree from Princeton University and his Master's degree in business administration from Harvard University Business School.

Opponent: Rep. Tim Bishop

Congressional District: New York's First Congressional District, covering eastern Long Island, will change starting in the 2012 race. Its western boundary will change to cover all of Hauppauge, some of Commack, and less of Kings Park. Click here for a map to compare.
