Brookhaven Notebook: Town Fair, Polar Plunge

A weekly look at stories from the Town of Brookhaven.

Brookhaven announced that the 31st Annual Brookhaven Country Fair will be held on September 10-11 at the historic Longwood Estate.

The fair will run from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day and feature activities and entertainment for the entire family, including traditional crafts, primitive cooking, Irish step dancing, Revolutionary War and Civil War re-enactments, pony rides, live music and more, according to the town.

Admission to the fair is $2 for adults and children under 12 are free. Parking is free and there will be a free shuttle to the fair from the parking area.

“The Brookhaven Country Fair is a great tradition that our residents have enjoyed for many years,” said Supervisor Mark Lesko in a statement. “The rich history and beautiful grounds of Longwood Estate make it the perfect setting for a fun day out with friends and family and I look forward to it every year.”

Town Announces Polar Plunge Date

In August, Lesko and Councilwoman Jane Bonner announced the second annual Town of Brookhaven Polar Plunge will take place on Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Cedar Beach in Mt. Sinai.

Lesko said last year he braved the icy water of Cedar Beach in November with 350 fellow plungers.

“I encourage everyone to plunge this year with your neighbors, friends, and of course Special Olympics athletes to make their dreams possible,” said Lesko in a statement.

Residents can visit the Polar Plunge site to get more information and start obtaining pledges. On the day of the event, registration will take place on November 19 between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and the Plunge will happen at noon.
