Bill To Withdraw From Common Core Introduced

Parents, teachers banding together to push legislation.

The looming clouds and rainfall didn't dampen the spirits of a few dozen local activists assembled outside Assemblyman Al Graf's district office Tuesday  to celebrate a state bill intended to withdraw from the national Common Core and Race to the Top initiatives.

The effort is being supported by local Assemblyman William Garbarino, as well as 21 others around the state.

The event was emceed by Jeanine Cozzetti, a Shoreham parent affiliated with the Facebook group "Parents and Teachers Against the Common Core" (PT-ACC).

Speakers at the event included Sachem alum Doug Smith, aide to Assemblyman Graf, and long-time Sachem educator Sal Nicosia.

"It's our job to make our legislators regret the decision they made to accept the $700 million bribe from Washington to push that RTTT and Common Core onto us," said Dave Green, a retired teacher and treasurer of education reform group Save Our Schools.

PT-ACC's next move is to get an identical bill drafted in the Senate. They're pushing Sen. Lee Zeldin and Sen. Phil Boyle for that initiative.
