B-BP Elementary School Students Salute the Flag

Local veterans group helps young students understand the importance of Flag Day.

Sylvan Avenue Elementary School students, in the Bayport-Blue Point School District, gathered in the plaza of the school donning red, white and blue during the school’s Flag Day celebration. Every member of the staff and student body waved small American flags as the American Veterans of Patchogue Post 111 paraded through the courtyard and led the flag raising ceremony. American Veterans member Jim Morge hoisted “Old Glory” with help from his grandson, Sylvan fifth-grader Brian Morge.

Throughout the moving tribute, students were made aware of the significance of the day and the importance of the symbol that waved before them. Following the ceremony, winners of the “What the Flag Means to Me” student essay and poster contests were announced and awarded, and the orchestra, directed by Jim Cesare, played “America the Beautiful.” A group composed of fifth-grade Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts also performed an informational and entertaining skit, entitled, "Recipe of an American Flag." Patriotism was felt throughout while the school stood together and sang “God Bless America.”
