A Look at How Sandy Altered Fire Island

Special program examines barrier beach changes.

The Fire Island National Seashore is presenting a special program on the aftermath of super storm Sandy and its impact on Fire Island.

The free one-hour outdoor presentation, "The Storm Beach," will be held at the Wilderness Visitor Center in Shirley on Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m.,

Attendees will get in-depth scientific information about how the storm event changed the barrier island landscape. A coastal geologist will lead the program which will include visiting an overwash fan and viewing before and after photos. Participants are encouraged to dress warmly and be prepared to walk the beach.
