Updated: Woman Fatally Struck by Train in West Sayville
After long delays, trains are now running on or close to schedule.
A woman was struck and killed by a train at 8:20 a.m. on the tracks between Rollstone Avenue and Cherry Avenue in West Sayville. According to LIRR spokesperson Rich Mendelson, an unauthorized woman was on the tracks and was struck by the 7:55 a.m. out of Babylon due to arrive in Patchogue at 8:25 a.m.
The people on the train were taken by bus to Patchogue after a 90-minute wait. Trains began running on or close to schedule at 1 p.m. In total, 10 trains were delayed over the 4.5-hour span.
Darrell Schober, who lives on Rollstone Avenue, said that the dead-end by the tracks has been a trouble spot for some time. "I have called the LIRR and MTA to try and get a gate put up," said Schober. "This area is such a hazard with kids hanging out and people walking on the tracks. It is a shame someone had to die."
