Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives are investigating the sexual assault of a woman on a Fire Island beach.
Police officers responded to the beach located on the ocean side of the Fire Island community of Cherry Grove at approximately 5:20 a.m. on Sunday after witnesses reported a woman screaming for help. A woman reported a man, armed with a silver handgun, beat and sexually assaulted her.
The man was described as approximately 30 years old, 5-foot-5 with a thin build. He had short black hair with a thin mustache.
Detectives are asking anyone with information on this incident to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
