Sunrise Highway Service Road Remains Closed After Oil Spill

Overturned tanker truck spills hundreds of gallons of gasoline onto Sunrise Highway.

According to the Suffolk County Police Department, a Crown Oil Company tanker overturned at approximately 2:15 p.m. near the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Locust Avenue in Bohemia. Sunrise Highway’s eastbound service road will remain closed through most of this evening.

The truck flipped while attempting to make a turn spilling “several hundred gallons of gasoline onto the roadway and into the storm drains,” according to a SCPD spokesperson.

No other vehicles were involved and there were no injuries reported. Some local businesses were evacuated as a precaution.

In addition to the SCPD, Town of Islip, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, West Sayville Fire Department and Bohemia Fire Department responded to the scene.
