UPDATED: Small Plane Crashes at Bayport Aerodrome

Two occupants escape with minor injuries, according to an eyewitness.

A private small biplane crashed on the runway at Bayport Aerodrome shortly after take off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday due to turbulence that forced the male pilot to abort takeoff, according to Suffolk Police.

The pilot, and a female passenger, suffered minor injuries. Police said the pilot, in deciding to abort the flight, jammed on the brakes and the plane flipped over.

An eyewitness told Patch at the scene he ran immediately over to plane and saw that a man and a woman had gotten out of the plane by the time he reached the aircraft.

The Bayport Fire Department and Suffolk Police were on the scene within minutes, he said. Community Ambulance transported the two occupants, who reportedly suffered minor injuries, to the hospital.

Fire department officials were preparing to hose down the plane to avoid any fire potential.

No charges have been filed, according to Suffolk Police, and the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the crash.

The Aerodrome, owned by Islip Town, has a grass runway which is not used for commercial aviation. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a national historic district.
