Sayville FD Suggests Residents Begin Preparing for Hurricane Earl

Fire Department offers tips and information for residents to prepare for Hurricane Earl.

Throughout the next few days, the Sayville Fire Department will be meeting with various Emergency Services agencies to put together a plan should Hurricane Earl become a threat to our area later in the week. The Fire Department will continue to update residents throughout the week with important information.

Although it will be several days before the storm reaches Sayville, now is the time to begin preparations.

The Fire Department suggests that residents begin gathering the following list of supplies and documents:

  • Water - at least 1 gallon daily per person to last 3 to 7 days
  • Food – non-perishable food, manual can opener, cooking fuel, cooking tools, paper goods and plastic utensils to last for 3 to 7 days
  • Clothing-Seasonal/rain gear/sturdy shoes for 3 to 7 days
  • First aid kit
  • Flashlight and extra batteries for each member of the household
  • Prescription and non-prescription medications
  • Eye glasses
  • Toiletries/hygiene items
  • Infant Needs (formula, diapers, etc .)
  • Full gas tanks in your vehicles
  • Radio - Battery operated and NOAA weather radio
  • Telephones - Fully charged cell phone with extra battery and a traditional (not cordless) telephone set
  • Cash (with some small bills) and credit cards
  • Keys
  • Toys, Books and Games
  • Important documents in a waterproof container or watertight resealable plastic bag (insurance, medical records, bank account numbers, identification, phone numbers etc.)
  • Tools - keep a set of basic tools with you during the storm
  • Pet care items (food and water, medical records, medications, pet carrier, muzzle, leash)
