Police: Sayville Teen Points Laser at SCPD Marine Officer

Erik Barry, 18, shines laser from his home on Palmer Circle Monday night; officer treated at hospital, police say.

A Sayville teen is facing charges after police say he shined a laser pointer into the eyes of a SCPD Marine Bureau officer on Monday night. 

Erik Barry, 18, is charged with second degree reckless endangerment, police said. 

Police said the crew of Marine Kilo was on routine patrol in the Great South Bay when they saw a green laser light coming from the shore at 11:55 p.m.

The light struck the operator of the boat, officer Robert Daniel, in the eyes "several times," police said. 

Daniels experienced blurred vision and saw spots in front of his eyes which hindered his ability to continue to operate the vessel, police said.

Daniels and fellow crew members located the source of the light as 200 Palmer Circle, a home that abuts the Great South Bay in Sayville.

Barry, who lives at the home, was arrested and officers recovered the laser device, police said. 

Daniels was transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center where he was treated for laser light exposure and released.
