Police Pull Boater From Great South Bay

Mastic man found clinging to his clam boat just south of Blue Point.

A Mastic Beach man who had fallen off his boat just south of Blue Point Beach was pulled from the chilly Great South Bay waters Monday afternoon by members of the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau.

According to police, Thomas Herrshaff, 57, was found hanging onto the back of his 24-foot clam boot at approximately 2:45 p.m. Monday. Officers Michael Axelson, Frankie Sierra and Kevin Comiskey aboard the SCPD Marine Mike vessel pulled Herrshaff out of the water.

Police said Herrshaff, who was suffering from the early stages of hypothermia, was taken to the dock at the end of Blue Point Ave. in Blue Point. He was transported by ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue.

Herrshaff’s clam boat was towed to the Corey Creek Marina in Blue Point.

It was not immediately known what caused Herrshaff to fall into the Great South Bay.
