Police: Local Businesses Sold Alcohol to Minor in Sting Operation

Two businesses sold alcohol Friday to underage volunteer working with police, officials say.

A Sayville liquor store and a Bayport gas station were busted for selling alcohol to a minor on Friday, police said. 

As part of a sting operation, Suffolk County Police sent a volunteer younger than 21 into four local businesses with the intent to purchase alcohol. , on N. Main Street in Sayville, and Jetco Petroleum, on Montauk Highway in Bayport, both sold alcohol to the minor, police said.

Funda Bilgin, 49, of Michael’s Liquor Store, and Jaqir Singh, 46, of Jetco Petroleum, were charged with unlawfully dealing with a child in the first degree for selling alcohol to a minor, police said. They were each issued a ticket to appear at a future date in First District Court in Central Islip.

The businesses will also be referred to the State Liquor Authority, police said.

The other two locations targeted in the sting--a Coastal gas station on Montauk Highway in Bayport and a BP gas station on Montauk Highway in Blue Point--complied with the law and refused to sell alcohol to the minor, police said.

Police said some of the stores chosen were in response to community complaints while other stores were randomly selected.
