Police Investigating Possible Hate Crime at Blue Point Church

A swatiska was painted on St. John's Greek church.

Suffolk County Police are investigating an incident that may be a hate crime at the Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church located at 77 Montauk Highway in Blue Point.

The church reported on June 25 that a swatiska had been painted on the building. Suffolk police told Patch the incident is being investigated by the department's Hate Crimes Unit.

St John's was the first Christian Orthodox community established in Suffolk county in 1940.  The church lost its longtime leader, Reverend John Kefalas, a  to liver cancer in early April. Kefalas, of Setauket, led St. John's Greek Orthodox Church for 33 years. More than 1,000 people attended his funeral on April 10.
