Police Chase Turns Deadly in Sayville

One killed in accident on Sunrise Highway Monday afternoon.

A police chase came to a deadly end Monday afternoon in Sayville after a 61-year-old man and his wife were struck at the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and westbound Sunrise Highway by a car being chased by a Suffolk County deputy sheriff for a reported robbery.

The wife, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.

According to reports, the suspects allegedly stole approximately $4,000 worth of clothing from a store at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead, leading to the car chase.

Community Ambulance Company was called to the scene at 1:30 p.m. for a motor vehicle accident with three injured people.

Three ambulances and two paramedics arrived on scene within three minutes and found the male driver, of the uninvolved vehicle, who was transported to Southside Hospital with a punctured lung. He was in serious condition.

According to the Community Ambulance Company, the driver’s wife, who was sitting in the passenger’s seat of the vehicle, was unconscious, not breathing and needed to be extricated by police and the .

“Once out of the vehicle, she went into arrest at the scene in the ambulance,” said Jamie Atkinson, chief of the Community Ambulance Company. “An advanced life support paramedic inserted a breathing tube to breathe for the victim, hooked up an EKG which showed no heart activity, inserted an intravenous IV line to give fluids and immediately administered several life saving medications intended to start the heart beating again.

"During transport to the hospital the medical crews performed CPR, rescue breathing and continued with the advanced life support medications until a pulse was felt. The crew revived the passenger and subsequently, the female surmised to her injuries at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.”

According to Atkinson, a male in his 30s was in the passenger seat of the vehicle being pursued by the deputy sheriff.

“That male sustained a possible head injury and brain bleed as a result of the traumatic incident,” Atkinson said. “The female driver of the vehicle refused any medical injuries and was taken into custody at the scene by the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office.”
