Newsday Driver Seriously Hurt in Hit-And-Run Blue Point Crash

Douglas Piekarski, 46, is being treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries following Sunday morning accident on Montauk Highway.

A Newday truck driver was seriously injuried in a hit-and-run crash in Blue Point early Sunday, police said.

Douglas Piekarski, 46, was driving a International Newsday delivery truck westbound on Montauk Highway, near Homan Avenue, at 4:35 a.m. when the truck was struck by an eastbound 2005 Chevrolet Malibu, police said.

The impact caused the truck to overturn and Piekarski, of Sound Beach, was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, where he was admitted with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver of the Malibu fled, leaving the car at the scene, police said.

The investigation is continuing and detectives are asking who anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
