Marine Police Rescue Kayaker off Fire Island's Old Inlet

Patchogue man rescued after attempt to swim to shore.

A Patchogue resident was rescued Saturday night by Suffolk Marine Bureau and Aviation officers after his kayack tipped while in the waters off Old Inlet in Fire Island.

Timothy Miller was paddling along about 8:30 p.m. when his kayack flipped and he lost his paddle. He initially hung onto a pylon and then swam to a small island, according to police. Miller then decided to swim to shore. The current, however, proved to be a bit too strong so Miller called 911 for help.

Marine Bureau Officers Michael Axelson, Frank Sierra and Brendan Grogan of the Marine Mike responded, as did a second police boat. A Suffolk County Police helicopter guided the boats because of the shallow water.   When rescued Miller was found very cold and was exhausted and was transported by South Country Ambulance to a local hospital.
