Sayville Man Seriously Burned By Hot Water

Community Ambulance Company and SCPD respond to call.

A 62-year-old male was burned by hot water on Foster Avenue in Sayville on Saturday morning.

The and the Suffolk County Police Department were dispatched to the address and Community Ambulance Co. immediately responded with one Advanced Life Support Ambulance and two Paramedic First Responders. The first EMS unit arrived on scene within three minutes of the initial call for help.

According to the Community Ambulance Company, upon entering the residence, it was apparent that the victim accidentally fell into a bathtub that was filled with scolding hot water and the ambulance company notified the Suffolk County Police Department’s Aviation to respond to expedite transport of the serious patient to the hospital.

The male victim was immediately treated inside the home by EMS crews from Community Ambulance Company for having second and third degree burns encompassing his chest, face, head, legs and arms covering over 50 percent of the body. 

“Our members applied burn sheets to prevent hypothermia and infection, treated for pain management and administered several life saving medications,” said Jamie Atkinson, chief of the Community Ambulance Company. “Community Ambulance Company’s members trained in Advanced Life Support followed the Parkland Formula, the national standard for treating burn injuries, and administered a large amount of saline intravenously. This fluid stabilizes blood pressure and replenishes fluid volume that is lost due to the extensive burn injuries.”

The patient was transported to the helicopter landing zone located at on Browns River Road in Sayville to be transferred to a Medevac helicopter operated by the Suffolk County Police. The patient was transported by helicopter to the Burn Unit at Stony Brook University Medical Center in stable condition.
