Levittown Teen Fatally Struck on Hempstead Turnpike

Peter Thearle was hit by two vehicles as he crossed the road.

A 19-year-old Levittown resident was fatally struck by two vehicles early Saturday morning as he attempted to cross Hempstead Turnpike, according to Nassau County Police.

Peter Thearle was walking across Hempstead Turnpike from the south side of Gardiners Avenue at 4:25 a.m. when a 2003 Dodge pickup truck hit him in eastbound right lane, police said. Thearle was then hit by a 2003 Saturn, which was traveling in the center lane of the eastbound side of Hempstead Turnpike.

According to police, Thearle was pronounced dead on the scene at 4:38 a.m. by an EMT from the Wantagh-Levittown Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Presently, detectives do not suspect “criminality."

My heart goes out to Peter Thearle's family and friends. I have a fifteen year old son. I don't know what I would do if I lost him. There's a question here: How did this happen!? Where was this midjudgment? Who misjudged? How much traffic is there on Hempstead Turnpike in the wee hours of a weekend morning? Maybe if we can determine who, where and how the error was made, we can learn from Pete's death and it won't be totally in vain.

What good advice. Unfortunately, the PEDESTRIANS have to be the more careful and vigilant ones. I always tell my son: "DON'T TRUST ANY CARS/DRIVERS. THINK DEFENSIVELY, AS IF EVERYONE DRIVING A CAR IS OUT TO GET YOU. YOU HAVE TO BE THE ONE TO WATCH OUT AND SAVE YOUR OWN LIFE." Maybe it's extreme, but not far from the truth. Based on my 36 years of driving experience, I'll guess that the odds are: every two out of five drivers are reckless, careless, distracted...can anyone add a few more?
