Little League Property Vandals Strike Again

Residents Thursday reported the second vandalism of B-BP Little League property to occur in one week.

Islip Town's Anti-Graffiti truck and workers from Bayport-Blue Point Little League property Wednesday, but the spotless condition of the fields was short-lived as vandals once again preyed on Park, this time damaging a dugout fence.

On Sunday graffiti was splashed across the concession stand, storage equipment shed and both dugouts. Candy was stolen from the concession stand as was equipment from the shed. Dugout fences were also damaged.

Just hours after the Town had eradicated the graffiti and fixed the fences from the first incident, a grounds worker arrived at the fields Thursday morning to find one of the dugout fences damaged again.

Little League co-President and Bayport Civic Association President Bob Draffin said he has a feeling those responsible for the damage Wednesday night are the same people who vandalized the property on Sunday.

“[The police] said they would increase patrol of the area,” Draffin said, and added the police and detective squad said they like to keep an eye on graffiti tags, which represent the artist’s nickname, to see if there are any gang-related tags.

Suffolk County police officers from the fifth precinct and the detective squad went down to the fields Sunday afternoon in response to a call reporting the theft and damage at Bayport Commons.

Draffin said the police responded to the more recent incident as well, and they assured him they would continue to monitor the property.

"The police are investigating," Draffin said. "Eventually, we'll catch whoever is doing this."

It was Draffin who contacted Islip Town Councilman Gene Parrington, head of the town's Anti-Graffiti Task Force, to request their help in covering up the graffiti from Sunday, which contained obscenities. The Town's efforts to effectively cover up the graffiti were successful, but the pristine condition of the property lasted less than 24-hours before the vandals struck again.
