Little League Concession Stand, Equipment Shed, Dugouts Vandalized

Graffiti damage and theft of candy, equipment from Bayport Commons Little League Fields reported Sunday.

Residents arrived at Little League fields Sunday to find graffiti splashed across the concession stand, storage equipment shed and both dugouts.

After further inspection, residents found that candy was stolen from the concession stand, and equipment was missing from storage.

Fifth precinct Suffolk County Police officers arrived on the scene as well as the detective squad in response to a call reporting the theft and damage at Bayport Commons.

“The report was made Sunday morning, and the incident happened sometime between last [Saturday] night and this [Sunday] morning,” a Suffolk County Police representative said.

Bayport-Blue Point Little League Co-President Bob Draffin informed Patch that grounds workers of the Islip Town-owned park painted over the obscenities spray-painted on the storage shed and concession stand.

Another unfortunate aspect of this incident is the timing: A childhood cancer fundraiser was scheduled at the commons Sunday morning, making it imperative that the obscenities be covered with paint before families arrived for the event.

At this time, the dugouts, made mostly of brick, have been left untouched by grounds workers, the graffiti “tags” visible. Draffin said police thanked the person who reported the incident.

“They [police] said they would increase patrol of the area,” Draffin said, and added the police and detective squad said they like to keep an eye on graffiti tags, which represent the artist’s nickname, to see if there are any gang-related tags.
