Seeking to 'Light The Night' on 9/11

Blue Point Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary sponsors fundraising event to remember those lost 10 years ago.

Ladies Auxiliary is sponsoring a fundraising event to remember the victims of 9/11 and the families they left behind.

The Ladies Auxiliary is asking residents to "Light the Night" on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 by lighting candles in front of their home on Sept. 11 at dusk.

From now through Aug. 26, residents can order a $10 kit with all the materials needed to participate. An order form is below. Kits will be available for pick-up at the Blue Point fire house on Sept. 7 and Sept. 8 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Half of the proceeds will be donated to Stony Brook University Medical Center's Burn Unit, with the rest of the money to be kept in-house to help sponsor Ladies Auxiliary community causes, such as scholarships for two graduating seniors and adopting two families during the holidays.

Auxiliary member Shelley Wenk said the organization began holding "Light the Night" annually immediately following Sept. 11, 2001. That year, the group donated all proceeds to the Red Cross for its efforts at Ground Zero.

The small group of women looks to get involved with as many projects as possible, Wenk said, and proceeds raised from their endeavors are used to fund projects supporting people, events and projects in Bayport-Blue Point.

"We try to keep the money in the community as much as we can. The [Stony Brook] Burn Unit does deal with the department though," Wenk said. "Light the Night is something very near and dear to my heart, I'd like to see everyone in the community participate."

More information can be obtained by contacting Shelley Wenk at 363-2890.
