Icy Conditions Make For a Busy Community Ambulance Day

Police calls were way up as well with 250 accidents reported in five hours.

The black icy conditions on walkways and roadways kept the Community Ambulance Company extremely busy Friday, with 21 calls for help handled by 3 p.m.

"That is more than double our average daily call volume in only a few hours. Of those 15 calls were weather related injuries," Department Chief Chris Gonzales told Patch in an email.

"We called in additional crews to cover the increased call volume. I am proud to report that every call received was answered in a timely matter by our members," he added."

The Sayville-based ambulance company wasn't the only ones busy. Suffolk Police reported they responded to 250 crashes between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., as well as 300 calls regarding pedestrians who had fallen due to icy conditions.
