Fire Commissioner Races Uncontested in Bayport, Sayville

Residents go to the polls Tuesday at local fire houses.

Voters in local fire districts will go to the polls Tuesday to elect new commissioners and other district officials in some cases.

Here is a look at the fire district elections in Bayport and Sayville.

BAYPORT

Two incumbents are seeking re-election this year.

Longtime fire volunteer Raymond Reilly Jr. is seeking election to a three-year position and Jeff Saperstein is running for election for a five-year commissioner seat.

Voting will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the firehouse at the corner of Snedecor Avenue and Railroad Avenue in Bayport.

SAYVILLE

Longtime fire commissioner Donald Corkery is seeking re-election this year and running unopposed for a five-year term.

Corkery is currently chairman of the fire district and has served as a commissioner for 25 years. The ex-chief has been a member of the department for 40 years.

Voting at the Sayville Fire Department headquarters, at the corner of Lincoln Avenue and Montauk Highway, will be held from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. The extended poll hours are to accommodate seniors and residents who may work shift days, and to make voting as accessible as possible, according to fire department officials.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloatedRead More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
