Crimes Nearby: Sex Offender Arrested For Lewd Acts

At look at crimes across the region as reported by Suffolk County police.

Suffolk County Police arrested a registered sex offender and charged him with allegedly making multiple acts of public lewdness in Suffolk County over the past nine months.

According to police, on Friday, February 1, a female customer at the Barnes and Noble bookstore in East Northport observed a male masturbating in the store. The woman yelled and the man fled.

Police determined the man to be Angel Laporte, 54, of 15 Bear St., Selden, who they arrested in front of his home on Saturday, February 2.

A further investigation by Second Squad detectives found that Laporte allegedly committed public acts of lewdness at the Deer Park Public Library on January 5, and at the Commack Public Library and the West Babylon Public Library on May 7, 2012, police said.

Laporte was charged with four counts of Public Lewdness. He was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip this past week.

He is also wanted by the New Milford Police Department in Connecticut, for three warrants for failing to register as a sex offender. 

• Charged With Stealing Home Heating Oil

Suffolk County Police arrested two people for allegedly stealing home heating oil from storage tanks on the property of eight vacant homes in the Mastic area.

According to police, Seventh Precinct Crime Section officers on Saturday, February 2, observed Frank Dawson, 46, and Towania McCrae, 44, pumping home heating oil from the underground tank of an unoccupied home on Hampton Ave. in Mastic and transferring the oil to three storage tanks that they were carrying in the rear of Dawson’s pickup truck.

After the officers placed both suspects under arrest, Dawson took the officers to seven other locations in Mastic where he had previously stolen home heating oil, police said.

Dawson, of Medford, was arrested and charged with eight counts of Petit Larceny, one count of Criminal Trespass 3rd Degree, and one count of Possession of Burglar’s Tools.

McCrae, of Mastic, was arrested and charged with one count of Petit Larceny and one count of Possession of Burglar’s Tools.

• Stolen Credit Cards Used

Suffolk County police and Crime Stoppers are seeking the public’s help in identifying suspects who used stolen credit cards to purchase merchandise at various locations in the Mount Sinai area.

According to police, on January 1, a female victim reported that her purse and her credit cards were stolen from her vehicle while it was parked in Port Jefferson Station. She reported the incident to her bank and later learned that her credit card had been used to make several unauthorized purchases.

Police said surveillance video obtained from one of those locations, a Mobil gas station in Mt. Sinai, showed two suspects — a white male and a white female — using the stolen credit cards to purchase items.

Both suspects appear to be in their 20s and the male was wearing a distinctive hat, police said.
