Cops Save Sayville Man After Heroin Overdose

The life-saving rescue was one of two in Sayville this past weekend.

A Suffolk County police officer saved two men, both in Sayville, who overdosed on heroin on separate occasions this past weekend.

Police Officer Kevin Rieppel responded to a call of a 30-year-old man overdosing on heroin in the parking lot of the Atias Flea Market, located at 5750 Sunrise Highway Service Road in Sayville, Saturday afternoon at approximately 2:25 p.m.

Rieppel responded and administered a dose of intranasal Narcan and resuscitated the man. The victim was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue by Holbrook Rescue.

On Sunday, Officer Rieppel responded to a call at a Sayville home on Division Avenue for an unresponsive man at approximately 1:55 p.m. Officer Rieppel administered Narcan to the 22-year-old victim, who regained consciousness, and the man was transported to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center by Community Ambulance Company.

The Suffolk County Police Department is participating in the New York State Department of Health pilot program involving the deployment of intranasal Narcan, a prescription drug used to reverse opiate overdoses.  Currently, the program is being used by officers in all Suffolk County Police precincts, Marine Bureau and the Emergency Service Section.
