UPDATED: Cement Truck Driver Killed in Bayport Crash

Crash on Sunrise Highway Wednesday morning kills one, police say.

UPDATE: The accident, according to police updates, happened in Bayport and the following information was provided after the initial report.

Suffolk County Police Fifth Squad detectives identified the driver killed in Wednesday morning crash as John Gagliano. Gagliano was driving a 1990 Mack cement truck eastbound on Sunrise Highway, west of Nicolls Road, when he lost control of the vehicle at 7:39 a.m. The truck struck the median and overturned, according to police. The 57-year-old Islip Terrace resident was ejected from the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

The truck, which is owned by Giaquinto Masonry Inc. in Deer Park, was impounded for a safety check by the Suffolk County Police Motor Carrier Safety Section.

ORIGINAL STORY

A cement truck driver was killed after his truck overturned on Sunrise Highway, near Nicolls Road on Wednesday morning, Suffolk Police said. 

The accident occurred on the eastbound side of the highway near Exit 51-Nicolls Road, at 7:40 a.m., police said. 

Sunrise was currently closed eastbound at Exit 51 as of 10 a.m. and is expected to be closed for a few more hours as police investigate.
