Be a Hero at Sayville FD’s Wilbur Ritter-9/11 Blood Drive

The blood drive is Tuesday between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

The Sayville Fire Department will host a blood drive on Tuesday, September 11th from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

This year’s September 11th blood drive is held in memory of Honorary Captain Wilbur Ritter, who perished in the line of duty after responding to an alarm on Main Street in 2006 as well as those lost on 9/11/01.

Wilbur was the chairman of Sayville’s Blood Drive for about 20 years and donated 128 pints which amounts to 16 gallons of blood in his lifetime! This year’s goal is to match the number of pints Wilbur donated.

Over 800 pints of blood are needed every day to meet the needs of patients in Long Island hospitals. There are many times throughout the year that Long Island’s blood supply gets dangerously low and is in an emergency shortage situation. Many of us take for granted that it will be there when we need it.

If you’ve been a donor hero before, please stop by and donate.  If you’ve never donated, please try it once. You will leave knowing that you are a hero and did your part to help save up to three lives and will probably decide to donate again and again! Call (631) 589-0189 for more information.

And so the taxpayer is once again asked to give more to an already out of control and bloatedRead More system. Every year the school districts on Long Island receive increases of millions of dollars to their budgets, and still they want to bleed the taxpayer for more. As two income families struggle to pay exorbitant tax bills, we’re asked to pay even more? We’ll here’s a novel idea, how about if the teachers union’s began demanding less? This early retirement baloney must stop, salaries should be capped, administrators and their staffs must be cut by at least eighty percent. In addition, educators and staff should have to pay for their own medical and retirement plans just as the rest of us must. Here on Long Island, families are suffering and sacrificing, and many are being forced to leave due to taxes which are out of control. It is time for educators to cease hiding behind children with threats of decreased student programs, and to make an honest and realistic observation as to why things are as bad as they are. To blame parents for not paying enough into the system to support the schools is ludicrous. The real problem lies in a system which is self serving, and run by incompetents blind to the harm they are inflicting upon our children and families.
