Bayport’s Marc Rubin was riding his bicycle when he saw a white ball falling from the sky over either Patchogue or Sayville Monday.

“This thing I had absolutely no idea what it was,” Rubin said in a NBC New York report. “It had this little curlicue tail at the top and was coming straight down at a 90-degree angle.”

Rubin said that he called it an unidentified falling object, and took two photos.

At the same time, Suffolk County Police received 911 calls and reports of a possible downed plane in Shirley.

According to the report, police looked for a crash and found nothing. Police deputy chief Kevin Fallon told NBC New York that the department’s helicopter pilots believe that it was some type of model rocket or a flare.

The Federal Aviation Administration said that there were no reports of any planes in trouble or any other issues in the sky on Monday. The agency plans to send investigators to talk to Rubin and review his photos.

Patch left a message with the FAA Thursday, and will update should we hear back. Patch also checked in with Suffolk County Police, who said there have been no additional updates.

eeyore23 and ItsNotMeItsYou -- your statements do not make any sense. if Mr Rubin was on his bike ANYWHERE north of the Great South Bay, he should be able to tell the difference between Sayville and Patchogue. If Mr. Rubin was west of Sayville, then he could have said towards Patchogue. If Mr. Rubin was east of Sayville, then he could have said towards Patchogue. If he was east of Patchogue, then he could have said west of Patchogue (meaning towards Sayville). If he was between Sayville and Patchogue, or if he was up in Setauket, there is a big question of Mr. Rubin not knowing if he was looking east or west. The way the towns are situated, even if he was in a boat on the Great South Bay, he should have been able to tell westward from eastward. There is no way getting around his odd lack of not knowing which way he was looking statement. He could have said east of Sayville or west of Patchogue or he could have said towards Oakdale/Sayville or toward Patchogue/Bellport, or he could have said south of Ronkonkoma if he was up in Port Jeff, but not "I don't know if it was Sayville or Patchogue." He chose those two towns - no one else did.

Oh, Dee Dee! Too cute!! I can't speak for the wording of Mr. Rubin's statement. Look at his opening line, and I quote: “This thing I had absolutely no idea what it was,” Now really, who speaks like that? And, you expect us to explain for him? You're over-thinking it, Girl.

Yes, I am cute. And, I think, too!

Dee Marie, the fact that you spent even five seconds typing that absurd response tells me you have too much time on your hands. You're really missing the point of the story and your long-winded explanation of your initial comment tells us you have other things you should be concerning yourself with. If you re-read the article, the author is making the statement about the location, not Mr. Rubin. In addition, poor editing could have made his statement seem odd. Add a comma and it's fine.

Truth is, a lot of people are seeing similar things all over the world in increasing numbers. It is human nature to doubt, but I will tell you my customer was in Jersey and saw 5 similar objects hovering. He is very pragmatic and is convinced he saw something very unusual to say the least. He forwarded the picture to me that he took and I too would be curious if I had seen it. The pic looks ligit, but I would guess it is a meteor fragment, which are also starting to hit earth at alarming rates.
