Bayport Man Charged with DWI, Leaving Scene of Property Damage

Jan. 8 car accident on Oakwood Avenue destroys fence and two telephone poles, according to residents; police say man left scene without reporting damage.

Police say they have located the drunken Bayport man responsible for a car accident that caused damage to at least two properties on Oakwood Avenue in the early morning hours of Jan. 8.

Tyler Hughes, 22, of Bayport, was driving a 2003 BMW when he was involved in a crash on Oakwood Avenue at 4:45 a.m. Sunday. He left the scene without reporting the damage, according to Suffolk County Police.

Officers tracked Hughes down shortly thereafter. Hughes was charged with leaving the scene of property damage and DWI.

Residents said the accident knocked down two telephone poles flanking an Oakwood Avenue property as well as a fence on the adjacent property.
