9-11 Inspires Commitments of Service

West Sayville Fire Department chosen by Premm students to be "beautified."

An important word in the vocabulary of students at Premm Learning Center (PLC) in Oakdale is commitment.

On Sept. 9, in honor of those who died and the heroes of 9-11, the Eastern Suffolk BOCES students with development disabilities pledged to provide community service to local and business organizations.

Among those recipients chosen by individual classes is the West Sayville Fire Department, which will be beautified with flowers planted in decorative containers. According to Principal Carolynn Hansen, seeds will be grown in the school and when the flowers bloom, they will be placed in containers personally decorated by the students.

Other pledges include visiting and contributing to the new 9-11 Memorial in Nesconset, collecting food for the needy, and saluting veterans.

A special surprise for the students, as the ceremony began, was the raising of an American flag that has flown over the White House. Teacher’s assistant Sheila Senacore made the arrangements through Congressman Timothy Bishop's office.
