Jury Awards $130M in Bayport Family's Malpractice Suit

A Bayport family's 10-year battle against a Port Jefferson hospital regarding malpractice during the delivery of their daughter has resulted in a $130 million award, according to a Newsday report, but it may not be the final chapter in the legal fight.

Thomas Moore, the lawyer for Shannon Reilly's family, is quoted as stating the award is nearly unprecedented and will provide necessary medical and care needs for Shannon who suffers from severe disabilities which the family claims was the result of negligence by the St. Charles Hospital and Rehabilitation Center.

The lawyer for the hospital told Newsday the hospital intends to ask the court to set aside the verdict and request a new trial. If that is denied the hospital will appeal the decision to a higher court.

The jury award is just the latest action following three trials, according to Newsday.
