Do you spend your day at a desk or in front of a computer? I
get asked all the time "How should I be sitting at my desk?" Even
though some of you have access to ergonomic evaluations for your workstation,
many people are still sitting with incorrect posture.
Here are a few tips to make your work station a bit safer:
1. When you sit in your ergonomic chair, your feet should touch the ground or
rest on something solid. Phone books work as good stools.
2. The chair itself should be fully adjustable from the arm rests, the seat
height, the back rest and the tilt angle of the seat. Most expensive chairs
have all these features, but not all chairs will. Do your best in trying to
adjust these areas.
3. The top of the monitor should be at the level of your eyes. This way, when
you are looking down, the full monitor is in your view. This allows your head
to stay in a neutral position, not looking too far down or up.
4. Put your arms comfortably at your sides. When you bend your elbows and have your arms/forearms at 90 degrees or perfectly horizontal, that is the level
your desk should be at. That is also the level where your mouse should be, as
5. Do not perch on the edge of the chair! Make sure you sit all the way to the
back of the seat so that your back feels the back rest. Perching on the edge
really stresses out the lower and mid back.
There is a lot of information in these five suggestions so make sure you read them over and implement them at your desk at home and at work.
