The nearly 50-year old church on Middle Road recently announced plans to completely renovate its parish hall in order to create a more contemporary and multi-purpose facility.

Built in 1964, the space, while serving the needs of its congregation, has also been made available to the residents of Bayport and the surrounding communities for meetings and events.

In recent years, the parish hall has been home to the Bayport Civic Association as well as other community groups. It has served as the venue for concerts and fund raisers, Boy Scout spaghetti dinners, church pot luck suppers, along with women’s retreats, rummage sales, craft fairs, bake sales, the church’s annual Vacation Bible School and the ever-growing and increasingly popular Christmas dinner.

Plans for this renovation have been under discussion for more than a year through an ad hoc committee that was formed representing the interests and concerns of different segments of the church membership. To date blueprints have been approved, permits have been granted, a general contractor was selected and hired, and materials ordered.

“We were blessed by a generous gift from long-time church member and dear friend, Carol Knapp, who passed away in September 2010," Committee Chair Nancy Avino said in a press release. "Her dedication to our church and her desire to enhance its music and youth ministries were our inspiration to undertake this project. We are excited to be able to make her wishes a reality.”

Work on the project is expected to begin in early March and be completed in the late spring/early summer.
