GSBAS' Ed Davis Memorial Beach Cleanup

Join us on Fire Island and enjoy a beautiful (free) ferry ride from Sayville to Sunken Forest and help to protect our environment by collecting and recording the litter found on the shore.

*Contact Beach Captain Carol Jansch at 631-567-4965 or email keyrol@verizon.net by August 20 so your name can be added to the list of volunteers for the free ferry ride.

About the Cleanup:

  • We will meet at 10AM at the Sunken Forest/Sailor's Haven ferry and return on the 3PM ferry back to Sayville.
  • There is free parking at a small Town of Islip lot at the corner of Brown's River Road and River Road, just south of the Sunken Forest ferry on your right.
  • Bring a lunch or you can purchase lunch at the concession stand, there are bathroom facilities too.
  • Garbage bags and latex gloves will be provided.

  • This is the 27th year of the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC)
  • In 2011, 6,368 volunteers, coordinated by the American Littoral Society, cleaned and documented 93,644 pounds of debris along 262.18 miles of New York State's shoreline.
  • In 2011 our group collected 1,964 different items on Fire Island
  • Sixty percent of all debris items found in 2011 worldwide were "disposable" items
