The Rise and Fall of the Blue Point Oyster

During the 1900s, Blue Point became famous for their oysters. During this talk, Jeffrey Kassner will explain how the Great South Bay came to be one of the most important oyster producing areas on the east coast during the late 19th Century, and the role it played in "oyster mania" in the United States. Mr. Kassner will look at the importance of the oyster to the south shore of Long Island and explore the factors that reduced the supply and demand for oysters. Registration begins on Tuesday, September 3rd at 10am for residents of Bayport-Blue Point. Non-residents can begin registering on Monday, September 9th at 10am. Please call the library at 631-363-6133 for more information.
