Who's Who of Sayville

Nancy Kruse and Raymond Kruse, Transition Specialists

Tell us a little about your Sayville connection.

We worked for 30 years each in the Sachem Central School District in the special education department where we were classroom teachers and transition specialists. Ray instituted the program and grew it to one of the most comprehensive in the state. At Sachem we worked with Sayville students in the Community Living Program and communicated frequently with administrators from Sayville regarding shared student services.

Can you explain to readers how you work with the school district?

We formed a transition consulting business to assist school districts with tasks associated with transitioning students from school to adulthood. Sayville is uniquely suited to our transition program and under the guidance of Mrs. Bohleber and Mr. Schuster it has evolved in scope.

How have you worked in conjunction with the Sayville businesses? Tell us how they have helped the children and the community.

Our goal is for all students to make a successful move from the closely supported public school environment to post-secondary education and employment. We have joined with several Sayville businesses that have offered expertise and signed on to help students in the community. The businesses we have partnered with are:

  • K-Mart
  • Long Island Sports and Rehabilitation Center
  • Pot Belly Pig Deli
  • Elaine’s Shoes
  • Optik
  • South Shore Home Health Services, Inc.
  • Sayville Diner
  • Deidre Burns, Attorney at Law
  • Capital One Bank
  • Crickets
  • Salon 36
  • Stop and Shop – Bohemia
  • Boy Scouts of America
  • Old Navy
  • West Sayville Boat Basin

Businesses have offered tours, work experience and classroom speakers. The program would not be successful without the support of our local business and school district community including managers, administrators, union members and staff. As part of the Sayville/West Sayville School Business Council we continue to foster partnerships.

What's your favorite thing about Sayville?

Sayville is a unique community. Its size and close knit sensibilities allow for an acceptance and conscious inclusion of all its citizens. All people are welcomed and encouraged to participate in Sayville life.

Where do you love to eat or shop in town?

Where haven’t we eaten or shopped in Sayville? We come to town for a quick hamburger or fine dining. This year we are taking advantage of the Sayville Chamber of Commerce gift card program to fill stockings and offer a little extra to people who mean so much to us and the kids we service.
