The Mary Lamont Band Headlines Wednesdays in the Park

A little county, a little rock and roll, and plenty of fun.

The Mary Lamont Band played to quite the crowd on July 27 at The Common Ground.  The band, dubbed “a little bit country and a little bit rock and roll,” played some country music covers as well as original music available on their CD.

The band did a few cover songs including a Sonny and Cher duet as well as a drinking song by Trick Pony called “Pour Me.” “I know this is a drinking song but my favorite drink is still chocolate milk for all those kids out there,” Mary joked.

The band then went on to perform some traditional county oldies but goodies. The first was the song “Crazy.” “This country song is most requested song ever,” Mary said. Written and sung by Willie Nelson, it was made popular by Patsy Cline.

The audience was encouraged to get up and dance and Mary even sang a few songs walking through the crowd.

Mary introduced the band members to the crowd as well. Skip Krevens was on steel; Cosmo LoCricchio on bass; Greg Dianka on drums; and her husband of 25 years, Jim Marchese on guitar and harmonica.

“Growing up in Canada, I just to see the town fair come in every year and it was such a big event,” Mary said, referring to their next number. “I wrote this song on Long Island in the middle of one of those fairs and it’s called ‘Take Me for a Ride.’” The band then played a special request for an audience member who called a few weeks ago. The Willie Nelson song “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain” was dedicated to Joan and her friend Judy.  After, Cosmo played a Jay Hawk song with Mary on backup.

The 50/50 raffle for The Common Ground raised $400, sending a lucky winner home with $200. Some upcoming events for the 10th anniversary of 9/11 at The Common Ground were also announced. The Common Ground was built as a tribute to those lost on Sept. 11.

A film dedicated to the first responders of 9/11 will be played at The Common Ground on Sept. 9, sponsored by Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay. On Sept. 2, also sponsored by Bill Lindsay, there will be a performance by two Broadway singers. The Common Ground will host its own Sept. 11 memorial with singers, a candlelight vigil and full moon labyrinth walk on 9/11.

This is the third concert of the Wednesdays in the Park series sponsored by Suffolk County Legislator Bill Lindsay and the Town of Islip Arts Council. The free concerts take place every week at 7 p.m. Next week’s show will feature the songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein.
