Spring Event on the Table at Business Council Meeting

The coalition of district officials and local businesses hopes to bring more people to Main Street, raise money for scholarships.

The Friends of Sayville Education Foundation hasn't been around for all that long, but it's already making an impact.

Thanks to contributions from teacher payroll deductions, the committee may raise $14,000 this year. Superintendent Dr. Walter Schartner said that money will be given to principals, who can determine how to use the funds.

Some elementary schools have already expressed interest in developing an after-school tutoring program.

The Foundation was one of several items on the agenda at , a coalition of school district officials and local businesses. The council meets monthly to discuss how students and store owners can work together.

At last week's meeting, committee members discussed plans for a spring event that would celebrate Sayville. The shindig, which would be held at one of the district's schools, would likely feature performances from students, food from local restaurants and possibly events on Main Street.

Proceeds would benefit student scholarships.

District officials also outlined plans to offer students with disabilities the opportunity to volunteer at four times a marking period.

The students learn entry-level job skills in the classroom, and this program would give them the opportunity to test out their knowledge in a real-world setting.

The district is also considering partnerships with , Old Navy, , and .

Low council attendance made it difficult for officials to discuss some of the agenda points, including student internships and strategies for helping home-based businesses.

"We threw a party and most of the guests didn't show up," said Dr. Schartner, who pledged to make a concerted push to boost attendance at the next meeting.
