Snow Continues to Fall in Sayville

Fire Department volunteers remain on standby.

A blizzard warning remains in effect in Sayville with heavy snow and strong winds in the area. According to weather.com, there is a considerable amount of blowing and drifting of snow in the area with zero visibility possible at times.

According to Wendy Liu from the Sayville Fire Department, members are on standby at the fire station, although it has remained quiet in the area.

With accumulations that could reach more than 15 inches, Sayville will need to dig out of this storm tonight and tomorrow morning.

Mary Neimeth from said that snowblowers sold out early Sunday morning. "We are prepared for the storm with pallets of ice melt and plenty of snow shovels, snow brushes, gloves, windshield washer fluid and everything else you need to dig out," said Neimeth. "We also have pallets of bird seed for all our feathered friends."

During the height of the storm tonight, north winds could increase to 25 to 40 mph with gusts of 45 to 60 mph.

Town of Islip, Supervisor Phil Nolan is asking local residents to stay home and keep cars off local streets to allow snow removal crews to clear the snow.

Nolan said there will be about 300 snow removal crews working Sunday and Monday across the town, which is responsible for clearing about 1,100 miles of roadway.

At Long Island Islip MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma, spokeswoman Catherine Green said that Southwest Airlines and US Airways canceled all flights after 3 p.m. The airport is planning to resume normal operations Monday at approximately noon. It is suggested that travelers with flights scheduled to or from MacArthur Airport call their carriers.
