Sayville Library Board Swears in New Trustee

Thomas Murray III takes seat on the library; president, vice president and treasurer are named.

The Sayville Library Board held its reorganization meeting on July 11 where newly elected trustee Thomas Murray III was sworn in.

Brendan McCurdy was once again elected as board president, with Mary Lou Centeri keeping the vice president’s seat. John Patin remained secretary and Linda Halliday was elected deputy secretary.

After deciding the different committees the board members would sit on, it was noted that an ad hoc committee has been formed to start preparations for the library’s 100th anniversary celebration in 2014. Aside from board members, the general public is welcome to participate in the planning.

Attendees of the senior women’s weight training and aerobic class weret for public discussion to check on the status of their class. The group of 20 women, ranging in age from 55 to mid-80s, presented to the board last month regarding the loss of their fitness class. Due to budgetary concerns and lack of space, the library discontinued the program for the summer.

A resolution has been presented, a compromise for both parties. A new instructor, who comes at a much lower cost, will begin teaching a weekly class on Sept. 15. The new instructor works with seniors as well and comes based on recommendations from the surrounding libraries. The class will be on a trial basis and the seniors all agreed they are willing to try it out and give her a chance.

As part of library director Alice Lepore's report, it was reported that the circulation numbers for June are up 262 year over year. The library also rang in more than 1,000 circulation hits per day, which is mainly attributed to the summer reading programs.

The board approved the fabrication and installation of the new library signage. After getting several quotes, the decision was made to hire TechSign of Long Beach for an amount not to exceed $13,375.
