Sayville Field Hockey: Play 4 A Cure Fundraiser

Annual event to benefit Islip Breast Cancer Coalition.

Sayville Varsity and JV Girls Field Hockey teams donned their pink socks and jerseys on Saturday for Play 4 A Cure, an annual fundraising event to benefit the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition.

This is the third year of the event, which was organized and run by team parent volunteers. "We actually raised $1600 -- $100 more than last year's event," said Kathy Ryder, one of the parent volunteers. "Money was raised Friday night as both the Varsity and JV girls paid to have pink hair extensions put in their hair after practice. With the $400 was raised, $200 went to the hairdresser, $200 went to The Islip Breast Cancer Coalition."

Those with a sweet tooth had no trouble picking out a few goodies for a great cause. Some of the homemade treats included Mississippi mud brownies, cookies, rice crispy treats, caramel apples, cupcakes, breads, chocolates and more. Audrey’s Bakery in West Sayville donated some cookie platters and cupcakes as well.

Aside from the baked goodies, the field hockey fundraiser was raffling off gift certificates generously donated by many stores in town. Some of the local businesses who donated to the cause included: Sayville Flowers, Debra Canavan, American Cheese, Past and Presents, Sayville General Store, Sayville Running Company and Sayville Bagel Café.

Also up for grabs were lotto tickets, flowers, a Vera Bradley bag, tea & cookie baskets and more.

"On Saturday, between the sale of baked goods, raffle baskets, coffee/like (all of which either came from the parents or local merchants) another $1400 was raised. We have merchants as far as West Islip, the Pines, West Sayville, Sayville and Blue Point that donated as well," Ryder said.

Ryder added that Susan Komen Fund will also get money from the event and the Connetquot Field Hockey team contributed to the sale. The Sayville girls field hockey teams will also contribute to a bake sale this week at Bayport Blue Point.

The Varsity team remains undefeated after Saturday's shutout 5-0 victory over Connetquot. The JV team also remains undefeated with only a few more games to go in the season.
