Sayville Bowling Hosts Relay for Life Event

More than 100 people participate in event to strike out cancer.

The hosted a event for the American Cancer Society on Feb. 11 that drew a crowd of more than 100 participants. In addition to the bowling, there was a 50/50 raffle and baskets up for grabs.

The Relay for Life team is made up of volunteers working to fight against cancer. All funds raised go to the American Cancer Society. This Relay for Life team is comprised of co-workers who are all part of the Long Island Family Medical Group, which operates offices in Sayville, St. James and Miller Place. After witnessing a few co-workers succumb to the disease, the team decided to band together in the fight against cancer. Long Island Family Medical Group is their sponsor.

“This is the second time we have held a fundraising event for Relay for Life at the bowling alley, and the turnout is even better than the last time,” said Marie Gruebel, team member and sister of captain Rita Grawey. “We did a little more advertising this time, on Facebook and such. We have over 100 people and that’s an excellent crowd, so we’re very pleased with that.” The sisters lost their younger brother recently to cancer, which makes the cause even closer to their hearts.

The team made all the raffle baskets on their own time with items that they all personally donated. “We are trying to be the number one fundraising team on Long Island,” Gruebel said. “We are also selling chance books and luminaires designed by an artist for people to carry during the Relay for Life overnight event.”

The team is hosting another fundraiser on April 9 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Flaming Hearth in Farmingville featuring a band and dinner buffet. Tickets are $35 if ordered before March 1. For tickets, call (631) 828-4283.
