Sayville BOE Approves $89M Budget Proposal

The Sayville School Board of Education has approved a $89, 461,217 budget for 2013-2014 that meets the state mandated tax cap and allows for additional resources on the elementary level.

The proposed budget, approved by the Board of Education last week, features a tax levy increase of 2.04% with all student programs and opportunities maintained and some even enhanced, according to Sayville Superintendent Dr. Walter Schartner.

While the district is eliminating three full time positions due to enrollment decline, it is hiring a .4 elementary library media specialist to increase library time for students and a special educational teacher for a second section of its PALS program on the elementary level.

The additional budgeted state aid received in April was put toward lowering the tax rate which had been at 3.6% before the state leaders increased aid packages.

Schartner said the district is also using reserve funds to cover the increased retirement system costs that came into play but yet is able to maintain a 4 percent fund balance with the proposed budget.
