Nighttime Closures of Nicolls Road

Closures begin in the Town of Brookhaven Thursday at 10 p.m.

For the protection of motorists, Nicolls Road will be closed under the Long Island Expressway (LIE/I-495) bridge in Holtsville between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. beginning tonight, Thursday, July 7 and will continue for approximately five weeks, weather permitting.

The nighttime closure of Nicolls Road in either the northbound, southbound, or both northbound and southbound directions will take place each night, Sunday through Friday.

In addition, the associated northbound and/or southbound LIE service road ramps to Nicolls Road will also be closed to prevent access to the construction area during the closure.

These travel lane closures are needed to perform preventative maintenance and painting of the LIE Bridge over Nicolls Road in order to maintain its structural integrity, prevent deterioration, and thereby help assure the safety of motorists. As with any roadway project, this operation is weather dependent and may be canceled, postponed, or prolonged due to inclement weather. Emergency service providers and local officials have been notified of these nighttime travel lane closures.

Motorists will be warned in advance of the closure via overhead INFORM electronic signs.  However, drivers should use alternate routes or they will be directed to the detoured route and will experience delays. Drivers who cannot use alternate routes are reminded to drive carefully through the work zone, follow the posted detour signs, and obey the flag person’s directions, for their safety as well as the safety of the highway work crew.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
