Margaritaville Shakes Up Sayville Again

Annual concert draws thousands to South Main parking lot for Jimmy Buffett cover band.

On August 12, the South Main Street parking lot was transformed into a tropical paradise, complete with grass skirts, Caribbean shirts and plenty of fun. The 10th annual Evening in Margaritaville celebration, an outdoor concert sponsored by the Greater Sayville Chamber of Commerce, brought approximately 3,000 Parrotheads into town.

Many concertgoers made their way down early to set up their beach chairs and snag a prime spot by the stage. The Jimmy Buffett music was provided by Ed Travers Band. The Ed Travers Band is known on Long Island as one of the premiere Jimmy Buffett tribute bands. With Ed and Dave March on bass guitar and vocals, the band also consists of Irv Berner on electric guitar; Dave Ravers on drums; Robbie Deloney on percussion; Tom Maxwell on rhythm guitar, harmonica and vocals; Mike Speranza on bass guitar; John Preddice  on trumpet and percussion; Keith Otis on trumpet; and Dan Smith on steel drums and keyboards.

For Carmen and Freddy Scholl, it was their first time to Margaritaville but definitely not their last. “We just recently moved to Sayville, so all of this is so new to us,” Carmen said. “I love all the events that take place here over the summer and we have taken advantage of all this town has to offer.”

The Gambino family, with four kids in tow, came down to the concert from Manorville because they have friends and family in the area and heard about the event. “The kids are having a blast dancing around, and the adults get to enjoy a free show,” the couple said.

The audience was able to participate in the best dressed awards for Parrotheads and Parrotkeets.  At the other end of the parking lot, Butera’s of Sayville had an outside bar set up outside, serving up margaritas, of course, and all kinds of specialty cocktails.
