LIPA: Nearly 80% of LI Without Power as of Tuesday Morning

West Sayville to Blue Point fared better than most Suffolk communities.

Hurricane Sandy came as expected Tuesday, delivering on predictions and impacting power for 905,267 residents across Long Island.

Suffolk County had 441,958 residents without power as of 6:38 a.m. Tuesday. Of that total 61,961 were in Islip, 115,145 are in Brookhaven, according to LIPA's Storm Center Outage website.

Local numbers are approximates: Blue Point (over 1,900) and Sayville (over 1,300), compared to Bayport's 500 to 600 outages and West Sayville (about 2,235).

Estimated times of restoration are still not available through LIPA, which reported it would not send crews out into depowered areas until it was safe due to high winds and record high flooding along the shorelines.

One LIPA employee told Sayville-Bayport Patch late Tuesday night he is expected at work at 7 a.m. today.
